For SVS President and co-founder Matthew L. Smith, real estate is a family business. Both his father and his grandfather sold real estate on Long Island, and he has been involved with the industry since 1983.
A graduate of St. John's University College of Business Administration, Mr. Smith has appraised properties that range from restaurants, nursing homes and golf courses to apartments and industrial buildings. His experience extends to more than 25 different states, with particular expertise in the New York metropolitan area and Nassau and Suffolk counties. He is a skilled expert witness in matters of real estate litigation–including tax certiorari and condemnation proceedings–and a practiced appraiser of multi-family and cooperative homes.
To support his dedication to professional excellence, Mr. Smith is involved with some of the industry's most respected organizations. He has long been a member of the Appraisal Institute, and has received both the SRA and MAI designations. He has twice served as Chair of the NY State Board of Real Estate Appraisal. He is also involved with a number of non-profit organizations, including the Mineola Chapter of the Lions Club, the Education Assistance Corporation and the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick.
Mr. Smith was born and raised in Mineola, and now lives in Dix Hills with his wife, Joanne, and their three children. His hobbies include boating, ice-fishing, and skiing; he is also an avid golfer. A firm believer in the importance of community service, he raised nearly $15,000 for the Special Olympics last February–by organizing a team to participate in a "Penguin Plunge" into the freezing waters of Connecticut's Highland Lake!
